Hello from San Diego. Great news! My agent is negotiating with a publisher for my next book. I hope to have it in bookstores sometime during the fall of next year. It is currently titled Saving Evan and is about two feuding parents who must launder money to save their delinquent teenage son. Behind every crime is a family.

When all was said and done, I had to learn the same lesson I did with my first novel, Murderabilia. Don’t over-revise. The book is written in the three points of view. I had gotten some feedback from acquisition editors and decided that Saving Evan would be more focused if I cut the point of view chapters of the teenage son. I was working on that for two months when the publishers made me an offer. “We like the teenager’s point of view,” they said. I found that I liked it too. Still, there are some things about Saving Evan that can be improved—there always are. So I’ll be working on that for the next month. But I think the book is almost there!

PARTNERS IN CRIME

We had our first author tune in from New Zealand for our meeting on May 14. Rex Pickett wrote the book that the movie “Sideways” was based on. Since then, Rex has produced two sequels and is in New Zealand to research and write the third one. “Sideways” has been produced in plays and musicals in several countries.

Rex has a new novel called The Archivist. It is a mystery. Nadia Fontaine, a very unusual woman character, was assigned to archive the works of a Pulitzer-prize-winning novelist. Nadia drowned in unusual circumstances. Was it suicide? Was she murdered? Her successor for the project, Emily Snow, suspects she was murdered and investigates by talking with Nadia’s co-workers and by reading Nadia’s diaries and emails. In effect, the novel has two protagonists. The book is a mystery that delves into the obsessive relationships of archivists with their subjects, as well as the fraught relationships of the famous author with his wife and the university department that reveres him. It has two time periods and is a very interesting book.

I’ve read some other very interesting books lately...

My good friend in Canada, David Brown, has just published his memoir. It is available through the Amazon Canada website. Nothing is Us is a searing and heart-wrenching account of surviving an abusive father. The father served his whole life in the U.S. military. Think of Pat Conroy’s The Great Santini. But David Brown’s father was worse. It’s amazing that David escaped and started a new life in Canada.

Chasing Justice is written by my writing partner, Kathleen Donnelly. She lives in Colorado and runs a business with dogs that sniff out drugs. In her book, a woman comes home from the military traumas of Afghanistan and adopts a dog that had belonged to a murdered law enforcement partner. She and the dog bond to solve the murder. Kathleen has deep knowledge of the way these dogs are trained and used. She also has a nice feel for the landscapes of Colorado. This is the first in a series and published by Carina Press.

Social Venture Partners continues to help nonprofits expand their reach in the San Diego area. The team I’m on continues to work with the Cesar Chavez Service Clubs. This month SVP chose some new organizations to help. Our Partners have selected Logan Heights Community Development Corporation and Voices of Our City Choir as our Investees for 2022. We are thrilled for the opportunity to work with these dynamic organizations at a critical juncture in their evolution when SVP can make an outsized difference during the next two years.
