ALLÂ of your "SEASONING BLENDS" are actually just combinations of individual herbs & spices
You get far more potency from actually using these individual ingredients — even if you don't have the whole 'shebang'
Avoid buying these blends, unless they're from somewhere reputable like Simply Organics (having a garam masala or a cajun on hand might help for certain recipes)
If not, I'd avoid them
Why?
Often time, the more of a 'blend' something is, the more chance these companies use (1) extremely poor ingredients or (2) add unnecessary fillers that contribute nothing to the flavor.
You're not really "saving" anything. You're being robbed. You're getting an inferior product that doesn't really inject your food with as much flavor as it should.
And if you're reading this, I know you care about QUALITY
So, take this as a sign and actually go through your pantry and eliminate the random spice mixes you don't even use
Just keep a few versatile ones that form the base for just about anything
Good staples to have:
- Mixed whole peppercorns (in wooden pepper mill)
- Dried herbs (rosemary, thyme, oregano, etc)
- Cinnamon powder
- Turmeric powder
- Cayenne pepper
- Coconut aminos
- Smoked paprika
- Whole nutmegs
- Garlic powder
- Real sea salt
Refer to the graphic below for the combinations you can use when you're cooking
You don't need everything, but it helps knowing what spices you can combine to achieve specific flavors
Also, while we're here, another incredibly easy way to add flavor into your meals is to keep fresh herbs on hand
Either grow them on your own, or pick up some fresh rosemary, spring onions, parsley, basil etc on your weekly grocery shopÂ
You'll very quickly find yourself adding them to just about every dish, and the flavor & health benefits are off the charts
Just look at how powerful rosemary is |
