It was the greatest collection of knowledge in the history of humankind. Paper wasn't even invented. They bled their words on scrolls — made from the piths of the papyrus plant.
On his conquests, Alexander The Great sought knowledge as one of the spoils of war. He collected every esoteric piece he could, and amassed it here.
After his death, the Ptolemaic dynasty made sure the best works of the planet were consolidated. In this one library. Every language, genre and culture was contained in The Great Library of Alexandria.
They made it custom to keep the original in the library and humbly give the contributor a hand-made copy.
At one time, it was said to have over 400,000 scriptures. Amazing.
Of course, we all know what happened in the end. It burned in a fiery blaze of glory, which some say is the work of Julius Caesar, ironically (though apparently it was not intentional)
