Welcome to the Judith Binney Trust pānui.

Twice a year we bring you news about the recipients of Judith Binney Fellowships and Writing awards, upcoming publications, updates about activities of the Trust and important dates for Fellowships and Writing Award applications.

2024 Fellowships & Writing Awards

The Judith Binney Trust is pleased to announce that the opening date for the 2024 Fellowship and Writing Awards is 3 July 2023.

The application period closes at 5pm on 25 August 2023.

The Judith Binney Fellowships and Awards support research and writing on the history of Aotearoa/New Zealand. They are awarded to scholars working on any aspect of the history of Aotearoa/New Zealand that supports the vision, purpose or kaupapa of the Judith Binney Trust.

This year's selection panel consists of Professor Bettina Bradbury (Chair), Dr Ngarino Ellis, Dr Peter Meihana, Professor Jacinta Ruru and Dr Frances Steel.

Panel Discussion March 2023

Te Pouhere Kōrero: Sacred time

On 28 March, the Judith Binney Trust and Te Pouhere Kōrero / The Māori History Association of Aotearoa (TPK) co-hosted a public event at the National Library discussing Māori history in the context of a wider history curriculum.

About 140 people celebrated the launch of Volume 10 of Te Pouhere Kōrero, a publication focussed on teaching Māori history in schools.

The panellists, Aroha Harris, Arini Loader and Peter Meihana all have, or have had, a close association with the Judith Binney Trust. They each spoke about their articles in the journal.

Paul Diamond, Curator Māori – Alexander Turnbull Library opened the session and chaired the panel discussion.

Judith Binney Trustee, Damon Salesa, spoke on behalf of the Trust. Damon highlighted the significance of Dame Judith Binney’s research and writing, his own connection to his former mentor and teacher, and spoke about the influence she had on a generation of students.

The Trust's chair, Cristina Billet joined other trustees, Bettina Bradbury and Ned Fletcher in the audience.

Ernest Scott Prize

Success for Rachel Buchanan

The Judith Binney Trust is delighted to see the success of Rachel Buchanan's bookTe Motunui Epa.

Rachel was awarded a 2020 Judith Binney Writing Award and used the grant to support her research and writing about five interconnected carved panels, Te Motunui Epa, their journey across the world and how they changed practices, understanding and international law on the protection and repatriation of stolen cultural treasures.

In June, it was announced she was the co-winner of the 2023 Ernest Scott Prize! The prestigious prize is awarded annually to the most distinguished written contribution to the history of Australia or New Zealand, or to the history of colonisation.

On Te Motunui Epa, the judges said, 'this book is an exemplar of modern history writing in Aotearoa New Zealand; it is also elegant and sophisticated and a cracking good read.'

Te Motunui Epa was also recently shortlisted for the Booksellers Aotearoa Award for Illustrated Non-Fiction at the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards.

2023 Fulbright NZ

Congratulations to Hinekura Smith

Hinekura Smith (Te Rarawa, Ngā Puhi) has been granted a Fulbright Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Scholar Award.

Hinekura, a 2022 Judith Binney Writing Award recipient, says: 'My upcoming research in the US aligns well with my JBT work.'

Hinekura will be researching Native American and Native Hawai’ian women’s traditional clothing making as decolonising and culturally regenerative arts praxis.

Established in 1948, Fulbright New Zealand offers a range of exchange awards for New Zealanders and Americans wanting to study, research, teach or present their work in each other’s country.

Trustee News

New Trustee

The Judith Binney Trust is pleased to welcome our newest trustee: Matariki Williams (Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Hauiti, Taranaki, Ngāti Whakaue).

Matariki is Pou Matua Mātauranga Māori | Senior Historian, Mātauranga Māori at Manatū Taonga, a curator, writer and editor in the arts and cultural sector. Previously she was a Curator Mātauranga Māori at Te Papa Tongarewa where she co-authored the award-winning book Protest Tautohetohe: Objects of Resistance, Persistence and Defiance with Puawai Cairns and Stephanie Gibson.

Her love of ngā toi Māori led to the founding of ATE Journal of Māori Art with Bridget Reweti.

Matariki is on the editorial board of the Turnbull Library Record journal and the Programming and Acquisitions Committee for the New Zealand Portrait Gallery | Te Pūkenga Whakaata.

Her writing has appeared in print publications including Declaration: A Pacific Feminist Agenda, Māori Moving Image, Te Manu Huna a Tāne, Climates. Habitats. Environments., and online publications including frieze, Art in America, Pantograph Punch, and e-Tangata.

Ockham Success for JBT Trustee

Ned Fletcher wins the Ockham General Non-Fiction Award.

Our congratulations to JBT trustee, Ned Fletcher, winner of the General Non-Fiction Award for The English Text of the Treaty of Waitangi at the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards - the country’s premier literary honours for books written by New Zealanders.

The Ockham awards judges said that 'Ned Fletcher’s extensively researched and meticulously constructed book provides a valuable contribution to scholarship, history and law, and makes a timely and evolved interjection into the conversations of this country.'

Trustee Damon Salesa's new publication

An Indigenous Ocean Pacific Essays

Our trustee Damon Salesa is, among other things, an acclaimed Pacific scholar.

In this collection of essays, he takes a journey through the rich cultural and historical tapestry of the Pacific. From the far-reaching indigenous civilisations that flourished in Oceania, to the colonial encounters that shaped Samoa’s history, and the complex relationship between New Zealand and the Pacific.

Publishing October 2023 by BWB.

The Judith Binney Trust was launched in 2018. One Fellowship and three Writing Awards were funded in 2019.

Awards have been made annually since then.

Recipients

Judith Binney grants are funding significant research and writing reflecting the diversity of historical research in Aotearoa / New Zealand. Here and in future pānui we will highlight the work of selected past and present Judith Binney Trust Fellowship and Award recipients and share information about upcoming publications resulting from their research.

Our relationship with recipients continues long after the period of their award.
