Winter is here and our summer birds are continuing the sometimes lengthy trek north on their annual migration. It has also been a busy time for GER, with the organisation assisting with the creation of a new connectivity initiative in Port Macquarie to connect Port to Plateau, and continuing to work with partners to assist hundreds of wildlife species and local communities across eastern Australia.

Local communities across south-eastern Australia are combining efforts in projects to assist animal species still recovering from the Black Summer bushfires as part of GER's partnership with WIRES. Glideways, Flyways and Stepping Stones will assist and expand populations of spotted-tailed quolls, glossy black cockatoos and dozens of other wildlife species.

Koalas and greater gliders are two of more than a dozen species benefiting from the reconnection of tens of thousands of hectares of habitat impacted by the Black Summer bushfires. GER and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) combined forces over a 15-month period to assess the impact of the Black Summer bushfires and undertake recovery projects to help communities, wildlife and landscapes heal. 

Young Aboriginal trainees are being supported to learn the methods of traditional burning with culturally endorsed fire practitioners across Wiradjuri Country. As part of the program, trainees took part in a knowledge exchange last year to learn in the traditional environment with knowledge holders and Elders. Designed by the Wolgalu Umbe Traditional Custodians, the exchange was supported by K2W Link, with funding provided as part of GER's Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund project funded by the Australian and NSW governments.

GER is supporting the creation of a new connectivity conservation initiative that will help plug a key gap in the Great Eastern Ranges in NSW. Port to Plateau, spearheaded by local Landcare groups, will provide a corridor for wildlife that links the coastal Port Macquarie region with the Comboyne Plateau. This highly diverse landscape, which transitions from eucalypt woodlands to subtropical rainforest, provides an important altitudinal connection for animals moving between the lowland and the ranges.
