On Monday 22 May at 7 p.m. in the Ignatian Spirituality Centre, 35 Scott Street, there will be a preview- showing of the Spanish film (with English subtitles) ‘What Lucia Saw’. Julian Filochowski of the Jesuit Fund for Social Justice and the Romero Trust will introduce the film.

The film tells the true story of a woman who witnessed the assassination of six Jesuits, their cook, and a teenage girl, by the Salvadorian army in 1989. The murders took place on the campus of the Central American University and shocked the world. Lucia Cerna, who worked as the Jesuits’ housekeeper, was the only eyewitness and the film is based on her account of what happened.

The Jesuits had publicly opposed U.S. support for the corrupt government in El Salvador and the military, which were known for kidnapping, torturing, and killing innocent civilians. The priests often ministered to the rural poor who were caught up in the conflict. For this, they were accused of being communists and supporting rebel groups. This was the reason they were targeted.

After the massacre, Lucia fled the country and made her way to Miami under the protection of the Jesuits, where she was pressured into changing her story by the FBI. She never did. Of the nine men accused of the murders, only two were ever convicted. Jesuits in El Salvador continue to campaign for all the facts to come to light and continue to call for all those responsible to be brought to justice.

Over the last few years the Jesuit community in Glasgow and Edinburgh has engaged in a process of discernment in depth about our mission in Scotland. That process has now been concluded by the Jesuit Provincial .

The process has confirmed that we should maintain our presence in Glasgow and Edinburgh and that we should continue to focus our efforts on the five works which we have maintained hitherto: St Aloysius Parish, Garnethill and Sacred Heart Parish Lauriston, St Aloysius College, the Ignatian Spirituality Centre Glasgow and the Edinburgh Jesuit Centre

We are most grateful to all those who have assisted us in that process and taken part in numerous conversations which have led to a significant outcome in the Strategic Framework for the Jesuits in Scotland

How does this work?

Each retreatant has their own retreat guide or ‘spiritual director’ with whom you meet each day via Zoom, and who will help you to reflect on your experience and discern. The online retreats are based on the Spiritual Exercises and the Ignatian tradition.

It will be important to discuss with your director in the opening meeting how your online retreat will fit with any of your other commitments and how you will organise your time during the retreat. The retreat begins with an introductory meeting with your director via Zoom where you will agree times for individual meetings which will begin the following day.

The Laudato Si’ Movement is preparing for the celebration from May 21st to 28th of the eighth anniversary of the launch of the encyclical Laudato Si' as a global movement. 

The guiding theme this year is "Hope for the Earth. Hope for humanity," with the film The Letter as the main resource to lead the week's events.

”Hope for the Earth. Hope for Humanity” - Saturday 27 May 2023 at 2.00 pm in the Ogilvie Centre, St Aloysius Church, 25 Rose Street, Garnethill. A powerful documentary exploring the principles of Laudato Si’ and the escalating impact of climate change on communities around the world.
