"How did we survive without AI?"

I hear you saying in a few months - if you aren't already saying it.

The truth is we aren't. We're in a crisis:

• Unrealistic workloads
• Teacher recruitment and retention disasters
• Strikes

The AI revolution is here and it will help us.

This is my mission.

But we need the right skills.

Understanding how learning works, designing quality learning and having a deep understanding of our subjects are and will be vitally important. When good teachers use AI, they are not being lazy, over-relying on technology or farming out their responsibilities. They are utilising the most powerful learning tool ever created to support them on their mission to progress their students' learning.

The quality of pedagogy is an obvious one, but to truly utilise AI like ChatGPT we'll need to get good at promptcraft.

the skill of being able to ask AI the right questions in order to get the response that you need.

The PREP Framework

A method I've developed to get quality responses from ChatGPT is called PREP.

When writing your question or request, PREP the machine!

Include the following elements in your promptcraft.

P - Prompt it

R - Give it a role

E - Give it explicit instructions

P - Give clear parameters

Here's an example:

In this example, ChatGPT has created a level 1 answer (in seconds) that can be used in a 'Be the Examiner' revision task. Give the mark scheme to your students, get them to mark it in groups and suggest ways to increase it to a level 4 answer.

Why not continue the dialogue with ChatGPT and develop this 15-minute task into a full lesson? It'll take you a few more minutes. Using the PREP framework, ask it to:

• Structure a class debate on this exam question and get your students to provide the evidence and conduct the debate
• Create a how-to guide for this question that students can apply to another question
• Write a level 4 answer and model it to your students
• Write a set of questions based on the lesson as an exit-ticket-style activity
