Hello, My Dears!
I’m writing this on a rainy April afternoon. Outside, the trees are in full leaf, the tomatoes appear to be thriving, and the blueberry bushes are already exhibiting hundreds of tiny little berries. While I’m not summer’s biggest fan, I’m already excited about what we’ll be eating when June rolls around.
Yesterday, I went to Greensboro, an hour’s drive from my home in Durham. I spent the morning talking to school children about the joys and frustrations of being a writer, and then I met my best friend from college for lunch. In spite of the fact that we only live an hour away from each other, we haven’t gotten together in years. Still, as soon as we saw each other, we started gabbing away as though it had only been a week or two since last our paths crossed.
It’s wonderful to have old friends, but I’ve been making some new friends recently too, and those friendships – when they really click – are equally delightful. (If you’ve started humming “Make New Friends, But Keep the Old,” you’re not alone). In this week's episode of Forget Me Not, Florence makes a new friend of sorts, a turn of events that came as a complete surprise to me. As I may have mentioned before, an author isn’t always in control of her story. Sometimes things happen that you don’t foresee.
