Hello, My Dears!
One of the nice things about writing Forget Me Not is that each of the characters feels like a friend. I’m fortunate in real life to have a lot of young friends, and Florence reminds me of a lot of them. She’s forward thinking and not afraid to take chances. In 1934, most of the young women in her social set would be married, and of course Florence could be married too, if that’s what she wanted. But she’s independent-minded and won’t marry Arthur just for convention’s sake.
What does Florence want? What I love about her is that she’s not rushing to find the answer. Florence, it occurs to me, is a thinker. We see this in several ways this episode. She’s thinking about the future of the Quilting Company (and reading economics journals, no less!), and she’s thinking about Edwina’s role in the group, something that seems to be on everyone’s mind these days.
I’m going to be honest with you: I have NO idea what Florence is going to do. Will she marry Arthur? What sacrifices is she willing to make for love – or for business? I promise that we’ll know by the end of the novel, if only because I need to know! Maybe you do too.
The monthly Quilt Fiction podcast, which is free and available to anyone with ears to hear, will be available later this weekend. I’m reading “Persimmon Moon,” from Margaret Goes Modern, a book of quilting stories I published a few years ago. It’s hard to think of a character more different from Florence than Amanda, the main character in “Persimmon Moon.” She’s dreamy and romantic, a believer in signs from the universe. I’m not sure Florence would know what to make of her!
I hope you’re beginning to see signs of spring where you are. The birds are getting noisy outside my window, always a harbinger of good things to come.
Thanks as always for your support! I couldn’t do this without you!
