Hello, my dears!
I feel like everyone is wondering where January went. Do you feel the same way, that just a minute ago we were making resolutions and attempting to clean up the last of the holiday mess, and here it is, suddenly February!
At least I’ve had a good start to my reading year. I finished Barbara Kingsolver’s new book, Demon Copperhead, in early January and turned the last page on The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck last week. The Good Earth is one of those books that a lot of people read in junior high school or high school, but it was never assigned when I was a student in the ‘70s. I think I would have loved it; I certainly enjoyed reading it at age 58.
I read The Good Earth for the Quilt Fiction Club’s 1930’s Book Club. Each month, we’re reading a book that the women in Friendship Album’s Wednesday Bee might read. Next up: Murder Must Advertise by Dorothy Sayers, and then Thank You, Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse If you’re interesting to listening to any of these books on YouTube, here are the links:
The Good Earth
Murder Must Advertise (A BBC radio drama)
Thank You, Jeeves
If you’re on Facebook and not a member of the Quilt Fiction Club, I highly recommend you join–and join in the fun!. It really is the nicest place on Facebook. Every week, we discuss quilts and books, share what we’re up to, and we do frequent postcard exchanges and an annual Christmas card exchange.
Here are a few things I’m enjoying right now:
Sherri McConnell’s A Quilting Life podcast and blog. Sherri’s always got great videos and patterns, and I love her book recommendations!
Kristin Esser’s Simple. Handmade. Everyday podcast. Full disclosure: Kristin is a dear friend (we even write a blog together). But even though we talk almost every day, I love listening to her podcast, where she chats about quilting, knitting, and what she’s reading and watching. If you like a cozy vibe, Kristin’s podcast is for you!
Claire Robinson on Instagram. Claire is an illustrator who also makes amazing miniature rooms. I love all things miniatures, and one day I’m going to learn to do what Claire does!
The Quilt Fiction “Loves Me, Loves Me Not” Quilt Along. It’s my first QAL, and I had so much fun picking out the fabrics! Now I’m busy cutting out fabric and looking forward to making the first block next week.
What’s 2023 been like for you so far? I hope you’re enjoying all we have on offer at the Quilt Fiction Story Guild! Did you know that you can listen to the first five chapters of Friendship Album, 1933 for free as well as follow along with the print version of Diary of Mad Quilter? Be sure to stop by to see what we’re up to!
Here’s to a fantastic February!
Frances
