Un-selfie Parenting

Anna Marie Glosser | Elementary Principal

As parents we hate seeing our kids unhappy, and giving in sometimes feels a lot easier than saying no. However, we're creating a "selfie" dynamic in our world where humans only care about themselves and not the community around them.
Pampering, snow-plowing away problems, and defending your child's every struggle keeps them from experiences that build resilience. To raise kids who care about others, you must actively work to set boundaries and expectations.
Say no. Research shows that kids raised with structure and boundaries have higher self-worth and feel more empathy toward others.
Praise the right things. Praise them for caring, sharing, and working well with others. Ask them specifically to share how they reached out to someone at school or did a random act of kindness and applaud it.
Practice gratitude. Children feel happier, cope better with adversity and increase their daily satisfaction when they practice gratitude. The words "thank you" cannot be said enough.
Call out inconsiderate acts. Don't allow your child to engage in even remotely inconsiderate acts; talk about how other people feel and help your kids learn empathy.
Focus on giving and not getting. Monitor consumption and set limits to the number of things your kids get. Engage in ways to give and serve to build the muscle of caring for others.
Now those are snapshots you'll be proud of as a parent: ones that show your child in an un-selfie way.

Character Trait | March

This Week's Trait
100 Days of Kindergarten
And That's a Wrap, Dude

The Junior Players' production of Back to the 80's really was EXCELLENT! This crazy play showcased 54 character references to 1980's pop culture. For kids whose parents are even too young to remember more than reruns and old movies, it was a real adventure. For the audience, it was a genuine blast from the past!

The Junior Players' production is a special one. Not only is this show exclusively for seventh, eighth, and ninth-grade actors, it is completely directed and mentored by seniors. This year's team, directors Lauren McCool and Samantha Kelley and production assistant Corbin Diviney, chose the script, cast the show, handled all of the details of creating the sets, coordinating props, overseeing costume design, and, of course, ran all rehearsals since September. They developed leadership skills that they didn't even know they had, became big friends to 20+ junior high and freshmen students, and changed young lives through their validation and relationships.

Junior Players is a flagship program here at SC. We are so proud of our actors, directors, stage crew, and all of the supporting folks!

Banner Week For FFA

Santiam Christian FFA traveled over snowy roads last week to the Sectional Competition at Eagle Point. Accompanied by their advisor Mr. Coomer, Ben Robinson and River Nygren competed in Extemporaneous Speaking. Haylen Rouse placed second in Creed Speaking and Jackson Kent placed third in Advanced Job Interview and first in Sophomore Prepared Public Speaking. Haylen and Jackson will be going on to the state competition in two weeks.

Not letting any grass seed grow under their feet, SC FFA traveled to Harrisburg for the District Convention later in the week where Jackson Kent was elected the new Upper Willamette District President. The team of Ashley Gibbs, Kyle Page, Ben Robinson, and River Nygren placed first in the Farm Business Management competition and the team will go on to compete at State Convention in 2 weeks. Chapter reporter, Grace Faber, accompanied the group.

Lady Eagles Take 5th in State

The lady Eagles had a great season this year, culminating in a 5th-place finish in the state tournament. Although they lost to Sutherlin in their final game, they made SC proud with their hard work and dedication throughout the season, finishing with an overall record of 24-7 and a league record of 10-2.

Senior Tayla Yost was named 2nd Team All-Tournament and Player of the Game in the semifinals. Senior Maddie Fields was named Player of the Game in the quarterfinals and in the 3rd/5th place game vs Sutherlin. Way to go, Eagles!
