Get behind me, Satan! Matthew 16:23

Well, that went badly very quickly! In one scene, Jesus calls Peter “the rock on which I will build my church.” In the very next scene, Jesus refers to Peter as “Satan.” Is this a classic example of Martin Luther’s idea of simul justus et pecator? (simultaneously saint and sinner). Or is it an example of what Paul warns against in his letter to the Romans, “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought” (Romans 12:2), or maybe this, “Do not be haughty” (12:16a), or perhaps this warning, “Do not claim to be wiser than you are” (12:16b).

There is a lot to consider this week in the texts from Jeremiah, the Psalmist, as well as Matthew and Paul. Come and see!

This month we are collecting PB&J (peanut butter and jelly and bread) for the food bank. We are also collecting new, packaged men’s underwear—sizes M, L, XL—and socks for Just Compassion. The quarter drive for Just Compassion’s laundry program continues as well. Drop quarters in the washing machine container on the table in the Narthex or write a check to the church and note Just Compassion on the memo line.

Singing This Week in Worship. We sing hymns to deepen our understanding of the Word we hear spoken. Be sure to read the commentaries our director of music, Tim Ditch, writes about each hymn.

Listening Season. The promised Listening Season is upon us. Please watch your inboxes and mailboxes for a letter from Laurin Vance, Consultation to Clergy, along with information on how you can participate in this important season of sharing the hopes and dreams of the faithful community that is Christ the King Lutheran Church/Cristo Rey Iglesia Luterana. Guest Pastor. Next Sunday, September 10, we welcome once again Pastor Tom Struck as guest preacher. Thank you, Pastor Tom, for filling in while Pastor Dorothy is away celebrating the Cottinghams’ 36th wedding anniversary!

Member Reception Sunday. We welcome nine new members into our midst during the month of September, including five through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. Sunday, September 17, is New Member Welcome Day. There will be a reception following worship. There will be baptisms and public welcoming on other Sundays throughout the month. Don’t miss these festive events! Please contact Gail Barzee to offer your help with set-up and clean-up on the 17th.

Quilting News. Start exercising your fingers for tying quilts! We will begin on Tuesday, September 19. We will continue to meet the first and third Tuesdays of October, November, and December, from 9 a.m. until 11:15 or so. We continue to want backings, which are usually sheets, at least 64” x 84”, not white or cream. Anything colorful will do.

There is still time to register for Women of the Bible. Please let Pastor Dorothy know if you are interested so that we can order more books if we need to. Come along and meet the women who led Israel, followed Jesus, and helped shape the early church alongside Paul, Peter, and the other leaders.

Women of the Bible meets Wednesdays at 7 p.m. on Zoom beginning September 13. All are welcome!
