[Jesus asked the disciples,] “Who do you say that I am?” Matthew 16:15
|
|
|
|
After asking the disciples what they have heard the public say about him, he then asks them this question … “Who do YOU say that I am?” It’s a question we ask ourselves daily … “Who do I say that Jesus is?” Then, oddly, Jesus instructs the disciples to “tell no one what we just talked about.” In the age of so-called “transparency,” it seems counterintuitive for Jesus to swear the disciples to silence. Come along this week and learn about Jesus, the Son of God, the Messiah, so that you are prepared to tell your family, your friends, your neighbors who this Jesus character is!
… Great is the glory of the Lord. For though the Lord is high, the Lord regards the lowly … Psalm 138:5b-6a
The steadfast love of the Lord be with you forever.
Pastor Dorothy

In Memoriam. We remember and commend to God’s loving care our sisters in faith, Hilde Konarzewski and JoAnn Murphy. Receive them, O God, into your loving arms. May they rest in peace and light perpetual shine upon them. There will be a brief service of Commendation and Committal following the sermon this Sunday.
This month we are collecting “loaves and fishes” (bread, canned tuna, crackers, etc.) for the food bank. We are also collecting new, packaged men’s underwear—sizes M, L, XL—and socks for Just Compassion. The quarter drive for Just Compassion’s laundry program continues as well. Read more under ICYMI.
Singing This Week in Worship. There is rich history in the music we sing in worship. Read the background on the hymns in the worship folder Many thanks to our director of music, Tim Ditch, for these interesting and informative commentaries.
Parking Lot Guests. If you drive by the upper lot and notice an RV parked near the community gardens, you are meeting one of our overnight guests who are members of the travel website Harvest Host. Think of it as an AirBnB or Vrbo for RV travelers. Our guests stay only one night and make any size contribution to Christ the King through our website. There are a few more reservations for August. If you see one of our guests, please introduce yourself and welcome them to Tigard and Christ the King!

Have you registered for Women of the Bible? We need to know how many more sets of books to order. If you have not picked up your books and want to participate, please let Pastor Dorothy know so that we will have them for you before the first session on September 13. Come along and meet the women who led Israel, followed Jesus, and helped shape the early church alongside Paul, Peter, and the other leaders. We welcome any donation you can make to help cover the cost of about $15.
Coming Later This Fall! A series of adult forums on our worship practices: music, movement, lectionary, hymnody, texts, and much more. Please be in touch with the office if you are interested. We are discussing the best day and time for these forums.

Just the Basics: Bread, Quarters, Underwear. This summer as we remember our neighbors in need, we continue to offer our support to Cascade Vineyard Food Bank and Just Compassion, two Tigard agencies helping the unhoused and the food-insecure.
Cascade Vineyard reports that the need for pantry staples remains high, especially pasta, beans, and soups.
Just Compassion is thankful for our quarter drive, which we are continuing. In July, we collected almost 800 quarters! Shelter clients are provided funds for two loads of laundry at a laundromat. If you’d like to contribute, bring quarters and drop them in the jar by the sanctuary entrance. Or write a check to the church and note Just Compassion on the memo line.
Another need is for underwear for the men who are staying in Just Compassion’s overnight shelter. They need new, packaged men’s sizes medium, large, and extra-large, and new socks are always welcome, too. Bring them to church and place them in the basket by the baptismal font, or call the church office and we’ll arrange for pick-up.
Quilting News. Start exercising your fingers for tying quilts! We will begin on Tuesday, September 19. We will continue to meet the first and third Tuesdays of October, November, and December, from 9 a.m. until 11:15 or so. We continue to want backings, which are usually sheets, at least 64” x 84”, not white or cream. Anything colorful will do.
