“The kingdom of heaven is like …” treasures in a field, a fine pearl, seeds planted and harvested, large catches of fish. Today we see the kingdom of heaven in action. Jesus tells the disciples to feed the hungry crowd with five loaves of bread and two small fish. Today, we are the kingdom of heaven in action. We are called to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, welcome the outcast. Take note of our ministry partnerships. We are called to bring forth the kingdom of God.

Just the Basics: Bread, Quarters, Underwear. This summer as we remember our neighbors in need, we continue to offer our support to Cascade Vineyard Food Bank and Just Compassion, two Tigard agencies helping the unhoused and the food-insecure.

Cascade Vineyard reports that the need for pantry staples remains high, especially pasta, beans, and soups.

Just Compassion is thankful for our quarter drive, which we are continuing. In July, we collected almost 800 quarters! Shelter clients are provided funds for two loads of laundry at a laundromat. If you’d like to contribute, bring quarters and drop them in the jar by the sanctuary entrance. Or write a check to the church and note Just Compassion on the memo line.

Another need is for underwear for the men who are staying in Just Compassion’s overnight shelter. They need new, packaged men’s sizes medium, large, and extra-large, and new socks are always welcome, too. Bring them to church and place them in the basket by the baptismal font, or call the church office and we’ll arrange for pick-up.

Singing This Week in Worship. There is rich history in the music we sing in worship. Each week we can read interesting background on the hymns, thanks to our director of music, Tim Ditch. This week we sing a hymn written by Saint Francis of Assisi in 1225, one written in 2000 on a train headed for Boston, and one set to a Jamaican folk tune.

Parking Lot Guests. If you drive by the upper lot and notice an RV parked near the community gardens, you are meeting one of our overnight guests who are members of the travel website Harvest Host. Think of it as an AirBnB or Vrbo for RV travelers. Our guests stay only one night and make any size contribution to Christ the King through our website. There are about 10 reservations in place for July and August. If you see one of our guests, please introduce yourself and welcome them to Tigard and Christ the King!

Guest Pastors. Pastor Dorothy will be away August 20 and September 10. Pastor Tom Struck will preach and preside. You are invited to step in to greet him and assist him in preparing for worship. All that is needed is for you to be here about 9:45 a.m. on one or both of those Sundays. Let Pastor Dorothy or Tim know if you’re willing to help.

The memorial service for Hilde Konarzewski at Christ the King is cancelled. The Peterson family (Hilde’s daughter, Kari) writes: Our family has planned what we want for my mom’s Celebration of Life Memorial based on what she wrote down and what we and her friends want to celebrate her wonderful life. Our family has found a religious location to celebrate her eternal life with God and allow features we want to share when and where we want during the service. With this decision, we will NOT be holding her memorial at CTK as previously planned … We are sorry this did not work out, yet we feel very good about our decision and new location.

At this time, we do not have any information about the location or time of the service. We will publish that information here if the family shares it with us. We will create space in a future worship service here at Christ the King to commend our beloved sister, Hilde, into the arms of God.

A memorial service for Joanne (Jody) Murphy will be August 11 at Moeller Funeral Home in Valparaiso, IN. You can send condolence to Tom Murphy at 2734 Rustic Crooked Circle, Valparaiso, IN 46385. An obituary is available online where you can leave a message for the family. The memorial service will not be streamed online.

Member Reception Sunday. We will welcome new members through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism and Affirmation of Baptism on Sunday, September 17. Who do you know who is seeking a faith community, Christian fellowship, and perhaps baptism? Invite them to experience God’s grace, welcome, and love at Christ the King. Come along and meet the women who led Israel, followed Jesus, and helped shape the early church alongside Paul, Peter, and the other leaders. The study materials have arrived; you can pick them up from the office. We welcome any donation you can make to help cover the cost of about $15.

Cristo Rey Misa. Hermanos y hermanas, ven a celebrar la misa bilingüe el segundo y el cuarto domingo de cada mes a las 5 p.m. Gracias a Dios! 

Brothers and sisters, worship at bilingual mass the second and fourth Sundays of every month at 5 p.m. You don’t have to speak Spanish. The service is printed in both languages.
