When the word of the prophet of peace comes true,

A lot of prophet-talk … what is a prophet, what is a prophet’s reward? And a lot of welcome-talk. What does it mean to welcome? This discipleship journey is a confusing and difficult one. There are so many questions … and, the bottom line seems to be this: we are called to tell the good news of welcome to everyone. By welcoming everyone in the name of Jesus, we welcome everyone in the name of God, who created everything and everyone. How do we welcome? With a cup of cold water and with “a festal shout.” Come, join in the festal shout, walk together in the light of God’s countenance, exult in the name of the Lord all day long (based on Psalm 89:15-16).

Just Compassion—Our Partner in Ministry and Mission. This Sunday (and for the month of July) we begin highlighting and supporting a new ministry—Just Compassion. Just Compassion is a coalition of religious, service, civic, and business organizations that have joined together to network and share resources to help those who are houseless. It serves Tigard, Tualatin, Sherwood, and Beaverton. Just Compassion provides three meals a day, overnight shelter beds, shower and laundry services, peer mentoring, and case management. The ultimate goal is to find housing for people who desire it.

On the first Sunday of the month, Just Compassion provides free laundry detergent and quarters, along with volunteers for patrons to talk with, to those who would like to wash their clothes. For the month of July, we would like to highlight this part of Just Compassion’s ministry by collecting quarters for their laundry day. If you would like to contribute to this ministry, please bring your spare quarters to church and drop them in the jar on the table in the Narthex. Alternatively, drop a check in the offering plate and write Just Compassion on the memo line and we’ll exchange it for quarters. All donations will be gladly accepted!

Singing This Week in Worship. Take a few minutes before worship to read the commentaries on the hymns in your service folder. The hymns are carefully selected each week to fit the theme of the day and ground us more deeply in biblical truths.

Holiday Observance. The church office is closed Tuesday, July 4. May you enjoy a peaceful and joyful celebration.

Pastor’s Schedule. Pastoral emergencies come at all hours and Pastor Dorothy is on call for those anytime. Her new office hours are Sunday after worship, as needed, and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Pastor Dorothy will be away on the following Sundays: July 30 and August 20.

Sunday Setup. We are looking for some fearless folks to help with setup, greeting the supply pastors, and getting the Zoom Balcony set up, especially on the Sundays when Pastor Dorothy is away. We have a few folks trained and could always use more helping, willing hands. There are step-by-step instructions. Get in touch with Pastor Dorothy or Tim to sign up.

Parking Lot Guests. If you drive by the upper lot and notice an RV parked near the community gardens, you are meeting one of our overnight guests who are members of the travel website Harvest Host. Think of it as an AirBnB or Vrbo for RV travelers. Our guests stay only one night and make any size contribution to Christ the King through our website. There are about 10 reservations in place for July and August. If you see one of our guests, and are inclined to do so, please introduce yourself and welcome them to Tigard and Christ the King!

A new study—Women of the Bible—begins in early September. Plan to come along and meet the women who led Israel, followed Jesus, and helped shape the early church alongside Paul, Peter, and the other leaders. The study will meet Wednesday evenings at 7 on Zoom.

 
Also coming this fall! A series of adult forums on our worship practices: music, movement, lectionary, hymnody, texts, and much more. Please be in touch with the office if you are interested.

Quilter Notes. Thank you to stitcher/tyers Myrna Gleason, Betty Nesvold, Jean Baker, Al Baker, and Nancy Skirvin. Al Baker delivered our 25 quilts to St. Andrews for Lutheran World Relief Ingathering. That ends our year for now.

We will begin again mid-September and will welcome more volunteers.

We could use colorful/patterned sheets (must be at least 64" x 84") to use as backing. Drop them by the church office.

A memorial service for Hilde Konarzewski is scheduled for August 19. Watch for more information to come.

Cristo Rey Misa. Hermanos y hermanas, ven a celebrar la misa bilingüe el segundo y el cuarto domingo de cada mes a las 5 p.m. Gracias a Dios! 

Brothers and sisters, worship at bilingual mass the second and fourth Sundays of every month at 5 p.m. You don’t have to speak Spanish. The service is printed in both languages.
