As we all know, wages have been fighting an unfair game against increasing inflation in today's economy. Higher costs and rising expenses call for bigger paychecks to sustain ourselves, so we're glad to hear of the expansion of the Progressive Wage Model (PWM) amongst retail staff.

Speaking of progressive, there seems to be growing interest in local firms in hiring persons with disabilities (PWDs), and our recent #SocialHR Series on Embracing Diversity attracted professionals keen to engage with PWDs. 

Can we improve inclusive hiring in Singapore? It was reported that in 2020 & 2021, the average resident employment for people with disabilities aged 15 to 64 was 30.1%.

• Singapore aims to have 40 per cent of working-age persons with disabilities (PWDs) employed by 2030 and this would mean placing another estimated 10,000 PWDs into jobs.
• The tripartite cluster intends to raise retail workers' pay and provide a career path. If variable components like commissions prevent pay from meeting the PWM minimum, firms may retrain people or alter job responsibilities to accomplish their goals.
• IPS reported that many Singaporean employees prefer flexible work alternatives over working from the office or from home most days, and two in five Singaporeans indicated they wouldn't accept a job if there is no such flexibility.
• If nothing changes regarding work-life balance and teacher expectations, burnt-out teachers will quit, observing that teacher turnover has risen in recent years. MOE's actions may assist, but other reasons are at play.

HR managers realize that humans are fallible. Humans can have performance gaps, bad judgment, and improper behavior.

When these flaws are combined with coworkers' personalities, pressures, and work needs, people might behave poorly at work.

When wrongdoing happens, addressing it head-on can prevent toxicity and legal implications. The worst thing an employer can do is delay or ignore the issue.

How do your employees view the role of HR?

HR today is a lot like the elephant in the tale of the 'Blind men and an elephant', and it's up to the employees to figure out what HR is all about based on what they know.
