GROWING SPACE

SyNRGE, LLC was established with the expressed goal of using the knowledge, technology and insights gained from decades of growing plants in space to feeding people on Earth in the decades to come.

Agriculture forms the basis of the worlds food supply. Extreme weather, drought, flooding, soil erosion and climate change present significant and costly challenges for farmers.

Climate change, pollical instability and population migrations threaten the food securing of whole populations.

Accessibility to space presents unprecedented opportunities to apply technology to increase yields in the field and develop new ways of growing food.

SyNRGE believes each of us has responsibility to ensure that every human being has access to safe and nutritious food.

SyNRGE believes the challenge of creating a self-sustaining food system that maintains fresh air, purifies water, and produces safe and nutritious foods for astronauts exploring the outer reaches of space has direct and meaningful impact to maintaining the and preserving the resources on Earth so it will feed generations to come.

As part of the challenge...

SyNRGE strives not only to tell the story of the past, but to be an agent of change for the future. Some of our recent activities and collaborations include:

  • working with the University of Florida on exploring the growth of microbes in the extreme environments on the Surface of Mars.
  • collaborating with the University of North Dakota and a NASA Deep Space Food Challenge finalists to  demonstrate the feasibility of innovative ways of producing and processing food on our journey to the Moon, Mars and Beyond.
  • developing a collaboration to launch experiments into space to understand the effects of cosmic radiation and microgravity on bioactivity of beneficial microorganisms.

SyNRGE believes that developing a strong network is key to a stable, sustainable infrastructure of healthy cooperation and collaboration between competitors.

We participate in the public and private dialogs that are recreating the future of agriculture. Look for us at the following meetings, reach out to us with a note or a call.

Together, we will grow plants in space and feed people on Earth.

Upcoming Events

In the coming days and weeks, you’ll be able to hear thoughts that are shared with Dr. Greenhouse (Dr. Nadia Sabeh) on the “What Plants Crave” podcast.

Also coming soon, look for the podcast “Stay Curious” with Mark Marquette, the host of the original educational series as part of the American Space Museum in Titusville, Florida.

These events will be posted on SyNRGE’s social media outlets of LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter when they are aired.

USDA North Central Extension and Research Activity-101 (NCERA-101) Committee on Controlled Environment Technology and Use at the University of California, Davis sign

SyNRGE will be attending the 2023 annual meeting of the USDA North Central Extension and Research Activity-101 (NCERA-101) Committee on Controlled Environment Technology and Use at the University of California, Davis from 19-21 April, 2023.

This is one of my favorite meetings, and I’m doubly excited about attending this year because I’ll be going back to my alma mater in Davis and have a chance to reconnect with colleagues and explore new opportunities to advance the art and science of controlled environment agriculture.

2023 Annual Conference of the American Society for Horticultural Sciences

Later in the year July 31 - August 4, 2023 we will be a lot closer to home, attending the 2023 Annual Conference of the American Society for Horticultural Sciences at the Caribe Royal Resort in Orlando Florida.

The ASHS Annual Conference is a showcase for the latest advances in science and technology related to horticulture and specialty crops.

This conference brings together researchers, scientists, industry, academia, government, and students across the entire spectrum of horticultural science to cultivate ideas and share new techniques.

The issues facing Earth are global in nature, and SyNRGE has expanded the scope of its work beyond borders. The solutions that space can provide are vast and varied, and SyNRGE is working to explore them all!
