Message from the Chaplain |
|
|
|
This is my last message as your chaplain. I have served my sisters with gladness. It has been a honor and an exercise in Christian love. I hope the messages have been positive and kind. Know that you will be in good hands with my successor, Jan Saling (Delta Epsilon ’73). May is full of celebrations, fun facts and folklore. Here are a few of my picks:
- “May" is likely named after the Roman goddess Maia, who oversaw the growth of plants.
- May’s full moon (May 5, 2023) is called a Flower Moon.
- May 1 is May Day celebrated in Hawaii as Lei Day!
- May 5 marks Cinco de Mayo.
- Mother’s Day comes this year on May 14 and
- This year May 29 marks Memorial/Decoration Day - a poignant reminder of the tenacity of life.
- And of course we have religious confirmations and student graduations.
“A warm January, a cold May." May acts as the bridge between spring and summer, hinting at warmer weather, stuck in spring’s grasp and heating things up for those already on their way. Enjoy May!

"Oh! fragrant is the breath of May
In tranquil garden closes,
And soft yet regal is her sway
Among the springtide roses."

AXO Alum Bowl for Kids' Sake Team |
|
|
|
In the spirit of Volunteer Appreciation Month - we are looking for sisters interested in joining an AXO Alum Bowl for Kids’ Sake team! Kate Marxkors (Alpha Nu '15) is involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters as a Big and on their young professionals board. The Bowl for Kids' Sake event is their big fundraising event for the summer!
You make a team of 6 and each person on the team raises money towards their goal (they recommend $200 but you can set whatever goal you want) and then you have a bowling day to celebrate hitting your goal. There’s a bunch of dates in July to pick from. You bowl and they have bottomless pizza, beer, etc and it should be really fun!
We’d need 6 people to make a team - if you’re interested please fill out this form! |

Megan O’Keefe
Zeta Sigma (Missouri State University) ’01
In Kansas City’s fast paced real estate market, why not have an Alpha Chi on your side?
Representing Greater Kansas City buyers and sellers, Megan's enthusiastic, can-do attitude and caring nature is ideal for identifying her client’s desires and skillfully guiding them to fulfill their real estate goals.
Educated at Missouri State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Restaurant and Hospitality Administration, her 15+ year career in hotels taught her customer service is key, as well as communication, problem solving skills, attention to detail, importance of a timely response, strong work ethic, empathy and humility. |
|
|
|
If you attended events at a Hyatt Regency in St. Louis, Kansas City, Detroit or Cincinnati from 2006 to 2020, chances are Megan’s capable skills were involved, as she rose from banquet and catering manager to senior sales manager.
When Megan isn’t making home ownership dreams come true for her clients, she enjoys spending time with her husband Pat, daughter Kennedy and son Will exploring new bike trails or watching baseball.

GKCAP held the 2023 Women of the Year and Scholarship Brunch on April 22nd at Indian Hills Country Club. The theme was “In the Winner’s Circle” with all things Debry including hats! With a record 227 in attendance, including 12 AXs, the event was spectacular. Fundraising activities included A Day at the Races 50/50 raffle, 7 resort accommodation certificate raffles, silent auction items, wine pull and Pickwick Candles. The menu included a traditional Derby sandwich along with the opportunity to purchase Derby cocktails. The opening speaker was Frances Mitchelson, Phi Mu, who is a Pittsburg State University professor and a member of the NPC council. She shared history and trends for fraternal organizations.
The 14 collegiate scholarship winners included 2 Alpha Chis, Beth Baum and Trinity Gilbert, both from Omicron Chapter at Baker University.
A total of $18,000 in scholarships was awarded this year. 19 Women of the Year, from all the local Alumnae chapters, were honored. Bev Nichols, Alpha Nu ’75 University of Missouri, was the 2023 AX honoree. Our own Tammy Hawks, Omicron ’69, and retiring GKCAP president, was honored as she passed the gavel to ADPi, Sara Bedwell. Tammy had an outstanding year as president. We thank her for representing Alpha Chi Omega so well in her service to the organization. |
