Message from the Chaplain |
|
|
|
For followers of Christian faiths, Easter Sunday is an incredibly important holiday. Shortly after the close of Lent, Catholics and Christians alike gather to attend church services, reflect on Easter Bible verses, and welcome warmer weather with spring-inspired celebrations. Some religious and secular traditions include sending Easter lilies. They symbolize purity and hope and are believed to have sprouted where Jesus’ blood and tears fell. Coloring and hunting eggs is actually pagan in origin. Eggs symbolize fertility and rebirth after winter. Flying kites on Good Friday is a tradition observed in Bermuda. A schoolteacher there used it to demonstrate the Ascension. Enjoy you and yours’ Easter and Spring traditions, gatherings and celebrations!

Gretchen Brandt
Gamma Zeta (Kansas State University) ’64
Still celebrating our LVII Super Bowl winning World Championship Kansas City Chiefs is Gretchen Brandt, who was lucky to join Johnson County Young Matrons in a recent behind-the-scenes tour of Arrowhead Stadium.
The tour included the skyview suites, the chapel where the Hunt family prays before each game, the newly remodeled locker room featuring Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelsey’s lockers, displays of the Chiefs trophies, rings and artifacts, and a thrilling walkout through the tunnel to the field.
They were reminded of many of the things visionary Lamar Hunt contributed to the game of football, including the 2 point conversion. The ‘Foolish’ lounge was so named for the ridicule Hunt suffered with his early concept of forming the AFL and also of his wicked sense of humor for his foolish naysayers. |

The Mu Mu Annual Meeting was held at the home of Laura Kaiser, Delta Chi (William Woods University) ’71, on March 9th . Susan
Lytton, Delta Chi ’78, presented a great program on “AX Treasures”. She presented her findings of lyres,
carnations, and other meaningful items. Susan discussed her research and procurement methods. She is
always on the lookout for AX-type items via estate sales, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Esty and garage
sales. She has an impressive collection that she shared with the group. There was a drawing for two
prizes from her collection: a convention tote bag and Lyre paper-weight.
The group voted on and approved our new by-laws, standing rules, 2023-2024 budget, officer slate and
new PAC for our region at the meeting. We thank the retiring board members: Beth Coffelt, Tara
DePaepe, Beth Koch, Alison Reigel, Brisa Schuler and Dianne Strunk for their work and support of Mu
Mu and AX. We welcome new officers joining the board: Lisa Littrell and Whitney Schmale. Officer
installation will occur in May with officer transitions in June. Please contact Bev Nichols with any
questions or interest in open positions on the board. Welcome to our new Province Alumnae Chair
(PAC): Sasha Williams, Epsilon ‘92. Sasha will be supporting all the alumnae chapters in the
Missouri/Iowa region. We are lucky to have her here locally. |

We gathered at Chaz at the Raphael on March 7 for brunch. For many, the smoky mirrors and old-timey music brought back fond memories. The specialness of being with familiar faces and the great conversation made up for the disappointing food quality and lack of service, a rarity in our lunch experiences. Hopefully the experience was better for the Big XII championship folks.

Gamma Visits History Oxford Schoolhouse |
|
|
|
One of the oldest schools in Kansas, the Historic Oxford Schoolhouse was built in 1877 and was in use at its original location until 1955. On March 3, 2003, it was moved 11 blocks south to its current location at 14701 Mission Rd, in south Leawood next to Prairie Oak Nature Center inside Ironwoods Park.
Until 1920, the school was the only one in Oxford Township, providing education for 1st to 8th graders in a single room.
We enjoyed a guided tour and many tales. One of them: Kids often had holes in their shoes which was tough in winter. So their moms would tuck hot baked pota-toes in the shoes to help, which later became their lunch.
Alice Hawk, Omicron (Baker University) ’58, was quite involved in the fundraising, restoration and procurement of artifacts for this living history classroom.
A costumed school marm is on hand for public visits Saturdays from 11 to 2 pm and Sundays from 1 to 3 pm in April and May. Kids are welcome. By appointment, they host many school field trips for children to experience the one-room classroom school day of pioneers complete from slates to tiddlywinks.
Interested in preserving history? The JoCo Heritage Foundation has an upcoming fundraiser, A Night at the Hop, a 1957 Murder Mystery, on Thursday, April 27, at Thompson Barn. Purchase tickets at bidpal.net/jckhf23. |
