European Job Guarantee Coalition

Update #1

Dear readers,

We are delighted to welcome you as our first subscribers. Thank you for your initial interest in our survey and activities.

The survey will run for one more week until April 14th. It forms the first essential part of a long-term strategy to support socio-economic policies at the European and local level.

Various variations of job guarantee programmes have been implemented in the past and are currently underway. As subscribers to this newsletter, we will keep you informed about developments among our coalition partners and beyond.

During the last couple of months, we have focused on building partnerships and sharing perspectives with organisations working on workers' rights, the right to work and the cost of living crisis.

While the coalition was initiated by the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) and the grassroots organisation Our Global Moment (OGM), our joint action has now been joined by Fondazione Pietro Nenni (Italy), Europe, a patient (Poland), and Territoires Zéro Chômeur du Longue-durée (France).

Writing to you is me, Philine Edbauer, working with Our Global Moment...

... I am 32 and at based in Berlin, where I have been living for nine years. I grew up near and in Munich, Bavaria, where I collected my first years of work experience as a bookseller, waitress and sales team assistant. Although the conditions could have been worse, I learned many lessons about how to demotivate employees and how not to run a company. I also bring to the job guarantee project several years of non-profit advocacy and community organising in human rights and public health. (I continue to advise German policymakers and journalists on these issues, so you may see me appear in these contexts, too).

I have a Master's degree in Area Studies (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) and wrote my thesis on the concept of disposability of workers in the context of geopolitical struggles, international politics and national history of violence, power, poverty and policing. I was first introduced to the concept of a job guarantee about 5 years ago when I heard about the Green New Deal initiative that Our Global Moment project leader Janina Urban was involved in. Then, last spring, Janina invited me to the Our Global Moment meetings, and I joined the group to strategise on how to advocate for the job guarantee together.

In the following issues of this newsletter, I will continue introducing people who are contributing to the coalition's actions.

We hope you like this new newsletter format and can benefit from its contents (which continue when you scroll down). Please let me know if you have comments or recommendations. A newsletter is a journey, and I look forward to it.

What Happens When Jobs Are Guaranteed?

"In the fall of 2020, the Austrian government’s public-employment agency decided to launch a job-guarantee program there—an initiative that would guarantee work to the unemployed. Anyone who has been jobless for a year or more now has the option of a guaranteed job for the duration of the program. The European Job Guarantee Coalition has been building networks and developing joint actions since 2022. Civil society organisations or groups working on job guarantee programmes, the just transition or similar issues are invited to join the coalition as partners or affiliated supporters.

The coalition's website, social media accounts and newsletter are edited and maintained by coalition partner Our Global Moment, a grassroots organisation with members in Berlin, Cologne, Málaga, and Belfast.
